E-learning has already taken a step further and there is now a part of it that that goes by the name of M-learning, as in Mobile learning. The rapid development of mobile phones today allows us to use them in a much more advanced way that wasn’t possible a couple of years ago. We are through our mobile phones connected to the Internet 24-7. The handsets themselves are enough advanced and powerful to be seen as small computers. Why, I have to ask, should we NOT use this in our teaching? Well, there is no good answer to that. If we are smart we just should. 

Google’s products are all about producing, communicating, managing and developing. Four words that can be well applied to what teachers do for a living. Even if they are mostly seen as business companions Google has started to use the word education when describing their products and soon I am convinced that business management and learning management will be merged in to one - tools for business might as well work in education and vice versa. A mobile phone called “business phone” will be of great use for learners since what it all comes down to is how we work with them. Within a couple of years all our kids, youngsters, pupils and students will be walking around with a smartphone in their pockets, a smartphone that could be used for smart education. 

Android is getting huge and most experts say that it will be the future of mobile phones. Neither Microsoft nor Apple are showing any special interest in changing this since they aren’t even close to integrating the mobile phone with the Internet as much as Google does. And herein lies the key to success, especially if we are talking education: bringing all the possibilities Internet offers to the mobile phone.

Du skriver redan om wiki som en möjlighet att lägga upp planeringar och annan inoformation för elever och föräldrar och jag tycker det är ett utmärkt sätt att göra det på. Det fina med wiki är att det finns dels många som är gratis och att de är lätta att jobba med. Låt mig få tipsa om det wiki-verktyg som jag använder, PBWiki. Det som gör det här lite lättare och också faktiskt mer tilltalande, är att det lika gärna kan fungera som en ett CMS (Content Management System), blogg eller portal. Utseended och andvändargränssnittet liknar också de nyss nämnda system. Genom att skapa olika sidor och lägga dem i lätt överskådliga mappar är det också lätt för eleverna att hitta till rätt sida. Vidare så är PBWiki lite mer socialt än de klassiska “andra” wiki-verktygen. Möjligheter för elever att skapa konton och kommentera m.m. Du kan också använda embed-taggar för att visa tredjepartsinnehåll så som forum, kalendrar (Google?) m.m. Ta en titt på mig lärar-wiki: http://studyaid.pbwiki.com. 

Google Kalender är bra på många sätt, med det behöver inte vara ett alternativ till en wiki, utan varför inte använda det som ett kompliment? Så vitt jag vet finns ingen kalender i PBWiki för tillfället, men du kan alltså importera en utomstående att visas på en sida. Visst finns det mängder av kalendrar på nätet och Googles behöver absolut inte vara den bästa. Du kan absolut använda Live, Windows, Outlook m.fl på samma sätt. Den stora anledningen till varför jag använder Googles produkter är att de fungerar så bra tillsammans. Har man väl börjat med t.ex. Gmail och GCalendar ligger det nära till hands att använda resten också. Allt går nämligen att mycket smidigt importera hit och dit, visa här och där - allt är kopplat till varandra. 

Det som helt klart talar för Windows och Live är att de flesta elever idag har Windows Live och Hotmail-konton. En annan anledning att fortsätta med Live är om du bor i Stockholm och jobbar inom Stockholm stad - tydligen kommer Live bli den nya eposttjänsten och office-verktyget så småningom (vilket jag inte alls tycker om). Med det i åtanke föreslår jag att du helt enkelt kör med de tjänster som kommer vara lättast att starta upp och fortsätta arbeta med, för det tar tid att t.ex. slussa in elever i ett nytt system. Jag konverterar alla mina elever till Google (utan att få en spänn av Google för det…bah :)) men det är på eget bevåg. En så länge fungerar det, men det är tar tid och kraft att fixa. Däremot är min känsla av att Google är snabbare och bättre på att utveckla sina system och dessutom satsa på nya tjänster, vilket talar för att du ska välja Google. Jag tror att Google kommer fortsätta leda utvecklingen och vi kommer att se allt fler Google-produkter i våra dagliga liv framöver. Vem vet, om två tre år kanske alla elever har Android-mobiler i fickan - då blir Googles tjänster ett mycket säkert kort för oss pedagoger.

Yeah, I agree. It is only a game. Thank god for that! I have no idea how many bad guys I have killed so far with my mouse and keyboard and I am starting getting really good at it and I am not alone. When the kids in school talk about the latest smash hit Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at the lunch table in our school cafeteria, they use almost the exact words. Kill. Good. Brains. All over the place. One could think that the kids I teach would be a little bit different from the rest of the Swedish school kids - these are immigrants from Iraq, northern Africa and other countries where violent conflicts have become the daily life. But no. They enjoy killing off people in games as much as anyone and to be honest, this scares me a bit.

The Call of Duty series could easily be thought of as a advertisement for American and British armed forces. Go to Afghanistan and chase terrorists, or to Somalia, or Iraq - the choice is yours. Be that cool SAS or Marine officer you have seen fighting their way through crowds on film. And repeatedly hear the narrator use sentences such as “You belong to the best trained and deadliest armed forces in the world!”. It is what we could expect from a recruitment ad by US Army.

I can’t but think of the scene from A Clockwork Orange when young Alex is strapped to the chair forced to watch screens showing violence, wars and dying people. The difference between this film and a game like Call of Duty would be that Alex eventually learns something from it and end up not enjoying violence. We are different. We don’t learn a shit apart from how to be better at killing people. Instead we are slightly brainwashed to believe that whenever USA and UK send out their forces around the world it is all legitimate and even cool. Perhaps the developer of the game, Infinity Ward, realize this a little bid and therefor wanted to change perspective a little bit and threw in Rio de Janeiro and war on drugs. After all, the war on terror is so 2001 and no one really cares anymore. We all know that Iraq and Afghanistan are two major frakk-ups and a silly computer game can’t change that. Or can it? Nah, probably not but it is a good try.

Maybe I shouldn’t be taking games too seriously and maybe I shouldn’t be thinking politics, but I just can’t help it. Simply because it is to darn obvious. It is like a bad film containing obvious product placements where the camera zooms in on the Apple computer or the Audi car logo. And there is a psychology behind that sort of advertising: people will buy more Apple computers and more Audi cars. I guess I could then say that people will be more likely to be a little bit happier about the wars around the globe, especially the ones the US started. 

Welcome to the entertainment industry where modern warfare is glorified and turned into something cool and enjoyable. Disgusting, isn’t it? But quite cool… 

I svensk skola är mobiltelefoner fortfarande någonting som det pratas negativt om och lärare sliter sitt hår i frustration över att de mest stör. Men frågan är om det inte håller på att vända. Eller, nej det kommer det nog aldrig göra då lärare i allmänhet inte är de första att se möjligheter utan snarare lägger all energi på att finna fel och brister. Däremot finns det en grupp pedagoger som tvärt om lägger sin energi på det motsatta - att se möjligheterna med den hemska, fruktansvärda, farliga tekniken. Ett exempel är läraren Mats Larsnäs (@larmats) som lägger mycket tid och arbete på att utveckla och använda IT i undervisningen och just nu med fokus på mobiltelefoni. Han är en av en växande skara pedagoger som till och med lyckas få extramedel av Skolverket till att utveckla sina idéer på Smedingeskolan i Kungsbacka och han har lyckats få med sig, om inte hela, större delen av personalen och eleverna. Jag saluterar dig, Mats!

I dagarna tillkännagavs vinnarna av The E-learning Awards 2009 (Bizmedia Ltd.) och vinnaren i kategorin “Mest innovativa nya produkt eller verktyg inom E-learning 2009” gick till ett företag som heter Learnosity. Vinsten pekar åt vilket håll framtidens utbildning går - mobilitet. Learnosity har nämligen tagit fram en e-learning-produkt som helt och fullt utgår från mobiltelefoner. Elever ringer helt enkelt upp systemet och får svara på frågor, göra val med knappsatsen och lämna uppgifter som sedan kontrolleras av en lärare. Eftersom mobilen är mer eller mindre skapad för kommunikation, för att lyssna och prata, är det språkundervisning som står i centrum i produkten Learnosity Voice.
